The paper co-authored by Hyunjung Kim and In-Kwon Lee, “Is 3DGS Useful?: Comparing the Effectiveness of Recent Reconstruction Methods in VR” was presented at IEEE ISMAR 2024, and ‘MARR: A Multi-Agent Reinforcement Resetter for Redirected Walking’, co-authored by Ho Jung Lee, Sang-Bin Jeon, Yong-hun Cho, and In-Kwon Lee, was invited to present at the same conference after being published in IEEE TVCG. Research Highlights: 3DGS and Multi-Agent Resetter Innovations Presented at IEEE ISMAR 2024

On October 18, 2024, the EVOVA VR team in CGnA won the grand prize at the “2024 Metaverse Developer Contest” hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and jointly organized by the Korea Radio Promotion Association, the Korea Metaverse Industry Association, and the Information and Communication Industry Promotion Agency. The grand prize includes a certificate and a cash prize of 10 million won. The EVOVA VR is a team of doctoral and master's researchers in CGnA's lab and participated in this development contest based on the theme of “VR Showroom utilizing 3DGS”.

2024년 10월 18일 과학기술정보통신부가 주최하고 한국전파진흥협회, 한국메타버스산업협회, 정보통신산업진흥원이 공동으로 주관한 "2024년도 메타버스 개발자 경진대회"에서 CGnA 연구실내 EVOVA VR 팀이 최우수상을 수상하였습니다. 최우수상에는 상장과 상금 1000만원이 각각 주어집니다. EVOVA VR은 CGnA 연구실 내 박사 및 석사 연구원으로 구성된 팀으로 "3DGS를 활용한 VR Showroom" 이라는 주제를 바탕으로 이번 개발경진대회에 참여하였습니다.

Dohae Lee's paper "ClothCombo: Modeling Inter-Cloth Interaction for Draping Multi-Layered Clothes" won the CLO Paper Award at the Korea Computer Graphics Society (KCGS) 2024 conference held at Sonobell, Gyeongju for three days from July 9. The paper was also selected as the best paper representing the College of Computing at the Yonsei University Graduate Innovation Award for the first semester of the 2024 academic year. This paper proposes the novel graph neural network (GNN) model that drapes multiple layers of 3D clothing on a 3D human avatar. It was presented at the SIGGRAPH-ASIA '23 conference in Australia in December 2023 and published in ACM Transactions on Graphics, the top journal in the field of computer graphics.

At the IEEE VR 2024 conference held in Orlando, USA last March, the paper "Redirection Strategy Switching: Selective Redirection Controller for Dynamic Environment Adaptation" presented by Ho Jung Lee and others won the Best Paper award. This award was given to six excellent papers within 1% of all papers submitted to this conference.

A groundbreaking research aimed at enhancing the immersive experience for virtual reality (VR) users has recently been published in the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, a top-tier journal in the field of computer graphics. Conducted by researchers from South Korea, Sang-Bin Jeon, Jaeho Jung, Jinhyung Park, and In-Kwon Lee, the study titled "F-RDW: Redirected Walking with Forecasting Future Position" introduces a novel mechanism to overcome the limitations of existing Redirected Walking (RDW) techniques that often require specific preconditions related to the layout of the virtual environment or the direction of the user’s walk.

Dr. Hayeon Kim, who received her Ph.D. in August 2023 through an integrated master's and doctoral program in CGNA's lab, has been appointed as an assistant professor at Dankook University (Jukjeon Campus) as of March 1, 2024. During her studies, Dr. Kim conducted various research and projects specialized in virtual reality and published her research in top-tier journals and conferences, including IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, IEEE ISMAR Journal Track, and SIGGRAPH 2022. Dr. Hayeon Kim has been doing outstanding research as a postdoc in CGNA lab from September 2023 to February 2024.

Innovative Research in Virtual Reality: Two Papers Accepted at IEEE VR 2024 Journal Track

The article "ClothCombo: Modeling Inter-Cloth Interaction for Draping Multi-Layered Clothes" authored by Dohae Lee, Hyun Kang, and In-Kwon Lee is accepted for publication in the journal track of the SIGGRAPH-ASIA 2023 conference. This conference is a highly renowned event in the field of computer graphics and will take place in December 2023 in Sydney, Australia. The paper introduces ClothCombo, which is a pipeline designed for draping various clothing combinations on 3D human models with different body postures and types. GNN-based networks are utilized to model interactions between various layers of clothing, allowing for the development of multi-layer apparel in an efficient manner. Hayeon Kim, Jinhyung Park, and In-Kwon Lee's paper ""To Be or Not to Be Me?": Exploration of Self-Similar Effects of Avatars on Social Virtual Reality Experiences" has been accepted for the journal track of the 22nd IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR) conference. The paper will be presented at the ISMAR 2023 conference in Sydney, Australia, October 16-20, and will be published in the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, a top-tier journal in computer graphics. The paper is the first to analyze in-depth the different experiences users have with avatars that are similar to them versus avatars that are not similar to them in a social VR environment. When using self-similar avatars, users experienced a higher sense of embodiment and social presence. On the other hand, presence, an important aspect of the VR experience, was not significantly related to the self-similarity of the avatar. Furthermore, self-similar avatars were found to decrease immersion, another important aspect of the VR experience. This could be due to increased self-awareness, which makes people more cautious of their behavior, which inhibits immersion. In addition, it was found that the voice similarity of the avatar was more important to the VR experience than the visual similarity.

The CGnA Lab, along with its startup company, MeTown, has been chosen for a three-year project aimed at supporting university-based metaverse research and development labs. This initiative is sponsored by the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT and administered through the Korea Association of Promotion of Radio Waves.

Under the project, the CGnA Lab will receive government research funding of KRW 200 million annually to work on the development of a "Metaverse Fashion XR Platform based on Human and Clothing Reconstruction." The project promises to advance the development of the metaverse, a virtual environment where users can interact in real-time with each other and with digital objects.

The CGnA Lab's selection for the project is a testament to its cutting-edge research and development in the field of metaverse technology. CGnA and MeTown Win Three-Year Funding for Metaverse Fashion Platform Development

On March 15, 2023, "MeTown," which was founded in our research lab, completed its official incorporation process. After a preparation period of over three years, MeTown was established as a subsidiary of Yonsei University Technology Holdings, and Jeon Sangbin, who has played a key role as a team member alongside Lee Dohae, who has been continuously involved as a core member, took on the role of CEO. MeTown has meticulously planned for the short and long term to achieve its goal of realizing the full-scale service of its mobile virtual fitting room, which it has been preparing for so long, within this year. Let us watch the ambitious growth of these pioneers, who started the lab's first startup.

지난 2023년 3월 15일 우리 연구실에서 창업한 "MeTown" 이 정식으로 법인 설립을 마쳤습니다. 지난 3년여간의 준비 과정을 거쳐 연세대학교 기술지주회사의 자회사로 설립된 MeTown에는 그동안 계속해서 핵심 멤버로 참여해 온 이도해와 함께 팀메이트로 핵심 역할을 해온 전상빈이 대표를 맡아 운영하게 되었습니다. Professor In-Kwon Lee has been awarded the Excellence Teaching Professor Award. This award was given based on his outstanding performance in the year of 2022 as evaluated through his lectures. He is one of the four professors from the College of Computing who have received this prestigious award.

The image above is the original version of the CGnA Homepage's cover image, "Giraffes in the City." This artwork was initially created in a smaller format in a traditional oil painting style, as part of a video painting paper published by Professor Jong-Cheol Yoon, who received his Ph.D. in 2012 from the CGnA lab. The Dally-2 AI engine then utilized the outpainting technique to enlarge the painting and produce the final version.

From February 1st to 3rd, 2023, ten members of CGnA Lab including graduate students and interns attended the HCI Korea 2023 academic conference held at High1 Resort in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province in Korea. At this conference, our lab presented a total of three papers.

MeTown, the startup team from CGnA Lab, won first place at the Yonsei University Graduate School Promising Startup Club Achievement Presentation held on January 9, 2023. The event was hosted by the Yonsei University Startup Support Team. MeTown team is scheduled to establish a subsidiary of Yonsei University's technology holding company in the spring of 2023.

At the awards ceremony for outstanding graduate theses innovation held on January 3, 2023, Jeon Sang-bin, a master's student at CGnA, won the Best Paper Award in the College of Computing. This year, a total of 11 Yonsei University graduate students, one from each college, were awarded the prize for publishing papers during the year 2022. The awarded paper titled "Dynamic Optimal Space Partitioning for Redirected Walking in Multi-user Environment" was presented at SIGGRAPH 2022 and published in the ACM Transactions on Graphics journal. Congratulations to Sang-Bin.

At the 14th Electronic Newspaper ICT Paper Contest Grand Exhibition, where ideas for upgrading major technologies in the ICT field were presented, Jeon Sang-Bin, a master's student, and Kim Hayeon, a doctoral student, both from CGnA Lab, won the Excellence Award. The awards ceremony was held on December 16 at the Webcash Group headquarters, with each recipient receiving a certificate and a scholarship of 3.5 million won. Jeon Sang-Bin, the first author of the winning paper, had previously received the 2022 Master's Thesis Award from the Korea Computer Graphics Society (KCGS) and the Best AI Application Research Award at the First Yonsei University AI Workshop.

ICT 분야 주요 기술을 업그레이드할 아이디어를 겨루는 제14회 전자신문 ICT논문 공모대제전에서 컴퓨터과학과 석사과정 전상빈 학생과 박사과정 김하연 학생 (이상 컴퓨터그래픽스 연구실, 지도교수 이인권) 이 우수상을 수상하게 되었다. 시상식은 12월 16일 웹케시그룹 사옥에서 진행되었다. 우수상에는 상장과 장학금 350만원이 각각 주어진다. 우수상을 받은 제1저자 전상빈 석사과정은 한국 컴퓨터그래픽스 학회에서 수여하는 2022년 석사논문상을 수상하였으며, 연세대학교 제1회 AI Workshop 최우수 AI 응용 연구상을 수상한 바 있다.

Kim Hayeon, Ph.D. candidate, presented at the ACM SIGGRAPH-ASIA 2022 conference held in Daegu, South Korea, on 8 Decemter, 2022, as an invited speaker for the IEEE TVCG VR Session. The title of the presentation was "Studying the Effects of Congruence of Auditory and Visual Stimuli on Virtual Reality Experiences." This session consisted of five presentations selected from VR-related papers published in the highly-rated journal, IEEE Tracsactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, over the year 2022.

The "MeTown" pre-startup team from CGnA lab has risen to the challenge! They were among the Top 10 finalists in the K-Startup 2022 competition. On November 24th, MeTown, a 3D virtual fitting room cloud startup under the Yonsei University Department of Computer Science and Graphics Lab, led by Professor In-Kwon Lee, won the encouragement award and 20 million won in prize money, ranking 8th at the "Challenge! K-Startup 2022" competition.

"Challenge! K-Startup" is the largest domestic startup contest, jointly operated by 11 government agencies, including the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korea Intellectual Property Office. A total of 5,420 participating teams competed in the preliminaries of each agency from January to August, followed by the integrated finals in September to November, leading up to the final competition. As a result, ten teams each in the preliminary and start-up leagues were honored, with the MeTown team winning the encouragement award in the preliminary league. The award-winning teams from the final competition can receive various follow-up support, including certificates, prize money, and exemption from document evaluations for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' startup support program.

Yonsei University graduate students Do-Hae Lee and Sang-Bin Jeon are leading the startup preparations within the CGnA Lab. The MeTown team, composed of talents in the computer graphics field, is preparing a fashion tech service called "3D virtual fitting room cloud." This service is based on artificial intelligence and cloud technology, allowing consumers to virtually try on clothes using their avatar, reflecting their body shape before making a purchase online, anytime and anywhere. MeTown is also planning a service that utilizes a daily coordination recommendation AI with clothes purchased from online virtual fitting rooms.

MeTown has won several entrepreneurship contests on Yonsei University campus, including the 2021 ICT Startup Challenge, where they received the Minister of Science and ICT award. Currently, MeTown is selected as a subsidiary candidate of the Yonsei University Technology Holdings and is pursuing corporate establishment and investment attraction. Representative Do-Hae Lee said, "The virtual fitting technology that has not shown a practical effect due to technological limitations for the past decade has come of age," and "We will accelerate the development to make it a seamless service and create a new market with online virtual fitting rooms."

CGnA 연구실의 “미타운 (MeTown)” 예비창업팀이 도전! K-스타트업 2022 왕중왕전에서 Top 10 에 올랐다.

지난 11월24일, 3D 가상 피팅룸 클라우드 예비 스타트업인 연세대학교 인공지능융합대학 컴퓨터과학과 컴퓨터그래픽스 연구실 (지도교수: 이인권) 소속 미타운 (MeTown)이 ‘도전! K-스타트업 2022’ 왕중왕전에 진출하여 8위에 해당하는 장려상과 상금 2,000만원을 수상하였다.

‘도전! K-스타트업’은 중소기업벤처부, 과학기술정보통신부, 교육부, 문화체육관광부, 특허청 등 11개의 정부 부처들이 협업하여 운영하는 국내 최대 규모의 창업경진대회이다. 총 5,420개 참가팀들은 1~8월에 각 부처 예선을 치르고, 9~11월 통합 본선과 결선을 거쳐 왕중왕전을 치렀다. 그 결과 예비창업 리그와 기창업 리그 각 10팀씩 수상의 영예를 안았는데, 미타운 팀은 예비창업리그에서 10팀 안에 들어 장려상을 수상하게 되었다. 왕중왕전에서 수상한 팀들은 상장 및 상금과 더불어 중소벤처기업부의 예비·초기·도약패키지와 같은 창업지원사업의 서류평가 면제 등 다양한 후속 연계지원을 받을 수 있다.

연세대학교 이도해, 전상빈 두 대학원생들은 인공지능융합대학 컴퓨터과학과 산하의 컴퓨터그래픽스 연구실에서 주도적으로 창업을 준비 중이다. 컴퓨터그래픽스 분야의 인재들로 의기투합된 미타운 팀은 ‘3D 가상 피팅룸 클라우드’라는 인공지능 및 클라우드 기술 기반 패션테크로 소비자가 즐겨 사용하는 온라인 패션몰에서 쇼핑할 때 자신의 체형을 반영한 아바타로 상품을 언제 어디서나 미리 3D로 입어본 후 만족스럽게 구매할 수 있게 해주는 서비스를 준비 중이다. 미타운은 이 외에도 온라인 가상 피팅으로 구매한 의류를 나만의 디지털 옷장에서 데일리 코디 추천 AI에 활용하는 서비스 등을 기획 중이다.

미타운 팀은 연세대학교 교내 여러 창업 대회 수상 이력들과 함께 2021 ICT 창업챌린지에서 과기부 장관상을 수상한 이력이 있다. 현재 미타운 팀은 연세대학교 기술지주회사의 자회사 후보로 선정되어 법인 설립 및 투자 유치를 추진 중이다. 미타운 이도해 대표는 ”지난 10여 년간 기술 한계로 실용화 단계에서 좋은 효과를 보지 못했던 가상 피팅 기술이 지금 때가 되었다”라며 “원활한 (seamless) 서비스가 되도록 개발에 박차를 가하고 온라인 가상 피팅룸이라는 문화를 정착시키겠다”라고 포부를 밝혔다.

Jeon, Sang-Bin, a master's degree student, has received the Best AI Applied Research Award at the 1st Yonsei University AI Workshop held on October 7, 2022. The Yonsei University AI Workshop, which was held for the first time this year, provided an opportunity for outstanding students studying AI and various companies leading the AI industry to meet, share the latest research trends, and interact together. The event was attended by LG Group affiliates, from LG AI Research Institute to LG Electronics, LG Display, and LG Uplus, who communicated with students. Additionally, various companies such as Naver Clova, POSCO, KT, Upstage, and Qualcomm also participated in the event.

2022년 7월 12일부터 15일까지 속초 델피노리조트 소노캄에서 열린 2022 한국컴퓨터그래픽스학회 (KCGS) 학술대회에 참석하였습니다. 우리 연구실에서는 총 2편의 논문 (이호정, 김하연) 을 발표하였고, 전상빈은 석사논문상 후보 발표를 하였습니다. 그 결과 전상빈은 석사논문상 최우수상, 이호정은 학부논문발표상, 김하연은 대학원논문발표상을 수상하였습니다. 또한 학술대회의 하이라이트인 해변가요제에서 김현정 (박사과정) 이 깜짝 은상을 수상하였는데 백댄서로 남자 랩원들이 출연하여 인기를 끌었습니다.

The Ministry of Science and ICT has held the 'Challenge for ICT Start-up 2021' which provides start-up business opportunities for graduate students participating in the ICT talent development project. Under the theme of 'Challenges for Startups,' the event featured graduate students from 39 universities nationwide, who showcased their startup ideas using their research and development achievements. After a fierce three-month competition, 10 teams were ultimately awarded with prizes that could be used as business funds, along with certificates of recognition. The "Metown" team of graduate students from Yonsei University, including Lee Dohae and Jeon Sangbin, achieved an exceptional result by making it to the final round and eventually winning the second place, earning a prize of 7 million won along with the Minister of Science and ICT Award.

과학기술정보통신부가 ICT 분야 인재양성 사업에 참여하는 대학원생들을 대상으로 창업 기회를 제공하는 ‘ICT 챌린지 2021’을 개최하였다. ‘창업을 향한 도전’이라는 주제로 열린 해당 행사는 전국 39개 대학 ICT 석.박사급 인재양성사업에 참여 중인 대학원생들이 연구개발 성과물을 활용한 창업 아이디어를 선보였으며 약 3개월간의 치열한 선의의 경쟁을 통해 최종적으로 10개 팀에게 상장과 함께 사업화 자금 등으로 활용할 수 있는 상금이 수여되었다. 연세대학교 이도해, 전상빈 대학원생의 미타운 팀은 좋은 성적으로 최종 결선까지 올랐으며 끝내 2위를 차지하며 과학기술정보통신부 장관상과 함께 700만원이라는 부상을 거머쥐었다.

Hyunjeong Kim, a Ph.D. student from CGnA, was awarded the 1st place prize at the Yonsei University Graduate Student Entrepreneurship Competition 2021. Kim presented her idea titled "Metaveres SNS that connects virtual space and reality" and received a prize of 3 million won.

2021년 연세대학교 대학원생 창업경진대회에서 CGnA의 김현정 (박사과정) 이 최우수상을 수상했다. "가상공간과 현실을 이어주는 메타버스 SNS" 라는 제목의 아이디어를 발표한 김현정은 300만원의 상금을 수여했다.

Presenting three regular papers from the same lab at a single Top-tier conference in the VR and AR fields, especially with three first authors, Tae Min Lee, Eun-Cheol Lee, and Dong-Yong Lee, who were all master's students at the time, is a rare achievement worldwide. In particular, the paper by Tae Min Lee (master's student), which is presented in the Journal Track, will also be published in IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, a top-tier journal in the computer graphics field.

IEEE VR은 VR과 AR 부문에서 세계 1위의 학술대회로 인정받고 있으며, 특히 한 대회에서 한 연구실이 세편의 정규논문을 발표하는 것은 흔하지 않은 일입니다. 더우기 세 명의 제1저자들인 이태민, 이은철, 이동용은 모두 박사과정이 아닌 석사과정 재학중으로 이 또한 흔하지 않은 일이라 할 수 있습니다. 특히, 저널트랙에 발표되는 이태민 (석사과정)의 논문은 computer graphics 분야의 top 저널인 IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics에 발표와 동시에 게재됩니다.

CGnA Lab was selected for Samsung Electronics Future Technology Cultivation Center ITC Creative Project in 2016. The research topic is "Automated Generation and Transformation of Abstract Style Control-based Multimedia Content using Machine Learning Features." The project is scheduled to be conducted for three years from 2016 to 2018, with a total research budget of 900 million won.

CGnA 랩이 2016년 삼성전자미래기술육성센터 ITC 창의과제에 선정되었습니다. 연구주제는 “기계학습 특징을 이용한 멀티미디어 콘텐츠의 추상적 스타일 컨트롤 기반 자동 생성 및 변형” 입니다. 2016년 부터 2018년까지 3년간 수행 예정이며, 연구비 총액은 9억원 입니다.

CGnA Lab was selected for the National Leading Research Lab (NLRL) in September 2011. NLRL is a government-designated research lab for the leapfrog research project. The research topic is the "Development of Realistic Maximization 3D Stereoscopic Content Production Technology." The lab will receive a total of 750 million won in research funding from the government over three years.
